Union Station

Sorry for the pic quality on this one, it's not so sharp. For those of you who are familiar with Los Angeles, you've probably made your way thru "Union Station" to catch a train at one time or another. This painting is 16 x 20 inches, oil on canvas, and depicts the outdoor waiting area of the old Art Deco era train station.

The paint handling is much looser than I'm accustomed to. Lately I've been experimenting with a more loaded brushstroke, thicker paint application, more palette knife use, and working quickly or more intuitively. This is the first one that I'm posting, I feel like it worked out well (although my pic doesn't show the variety of color in my darker shadow areas).

This building has a great "southwestern" feel. There's probably a better word for it. From what I've seen described as 'painterly', this one by comparison looks more 'painterly' than your previous ones. Which is good, especially since you were going for fast and loose.

Hi Tony, thank you for popping in to my blog; I am so glad you did because now I have seen yours and I love it - I'll definitely be a regular visitor.

Hi Tony. Thanks for dropping by my blog and dropping a line! I very much enjoy your work and viewing the local scenes you depict so beautifully and vividly. San Diego definitely has a lot of interesting buildings to paint. Keep up the good work! Maybe we'll cross paths sometime!

Thanks BG,
It's nice to cut loose and finish a painting quickly for a change.

Hi Eric, the alla-prima approach is fun. But I still can't help but go back and pick away at it a little after it's dry.

Glad I found your blog, Triecia. It's interesting to see painters' work from Australia like yours.

When I was in Paris, the only two plein-air painters I met painting there were from Australia... funny.

Hey Danny, feel free to hit me up to go painting sometime. I'll warn you though... I'm rusty with my plein-air work.

Hello Tony Peters,
I quite enjoy your work. It kind of looks like a toy-city and the colors are so pure. Strong contrasts and interesting shadow castings. I'm not talking about this perticular painting rather about the impression I get from all of your work.
Sometimes i wonder if I could paint like that more from emagination then from reality?
I think there is always a different of the colors one see "inside" and those from real. If u mix the color from real, something real comes out, if one mix from the color that evolve inside the head, one paints somehing more likely fantastic.
I get confused what to prefer?? 50:50 or 70% head 30% real-color?
Or 100% head color ? Look at it, look away-paint it?
Sometimes I get confused?

ps: I will put u to my favorites

Hey DW,

That's a good question, thanks for your comment. I feel that my color sense is "inspired" by nature, but must come from my knowledge of color theory (in my head) when I'm executing a painting. I try to limit my color within a select range for each piece. Sometimes less is more. Everything is based on the simple idea of complimentary colors... blue and orange... pink and bluish-gray... red and green... or yellow and purple...etc. It's my favorite mood-setting device. And I've used it in every successful painting I've done.

I like this painting: Art Deco, broad, confident brush strokes and an Americana scene; very nice indeed!

Thanks Bill, I do enjoy running wild and free... working from home allows me to go days without showering and I can run around the studio in my underwear.
