This is a small 12x12 inch painting I did, "Glendale Freeway". Going with the theme of Los Angeles icons and architecture, I felt like these freeways and looming overpasses will be our generation's legacy, like the Romans' great structures (the aqueducts and the coliseum). These great creations that will one day outlive their creators.
The bold brushwork and dark palette was inspired by my mentor Richard Bunkall who died of ALS in 1999. Here's an example of his work (top image). If you want one of his paintings, good luck. They're $250,00 to $350,000 (if you can find one that's available).

I have to say, I am pleased to see another painting with a knocked back, darker color palette. The really intensely bright ones have there merits, but my personal aesthetic leans towards the darker colors.
This painting is quite lovely.
And the image by Mr. Bunkall is also very nice. I don't think I have seen his work before. I might have to track more of it down.
Jesse,
I also prefer this palette. I do try to vary my approach from time to time. But it seems the subtle colors are a harder sell for some reason (at least at my gallery).
Bunkall is certainly one of my heroes. It's my biased opinion that he's the greatest "undiscovered" painter of the late 20th century. That is, if you call $250,000 a pop "undiscovered".
I wish I were that undiscovered...
He's known, but not famous in the sense that there are tons of books on him or the average Joe would have heard of him. I love his work. Nice simple painting by you to.
